Here is some general information that we hope will help you as you organise your special event.
Band / Music / Caller
We organise a caller (we know loads of first class callers) and its included in our price. The band and caller will arrive on time, set up quietly and tidily, and then play so you can dance the night (or afternoon) away. Once we’re all done, we pack away quietly and tidily and head off. And because we love doing this so much, by the end of the evening, the hosts, guests and the band will all have had such a good time that everyone’s feet will still be tapping :O)
If you need Melobo to play background music at a party or other function (not a barn dance) then our charges are lower, as we don’t need a caller and we probably don’t need our big sound system.
These can be tricky to get hold of, so do your best to sort it in plenty of time. At least six months ahead is what you should aim for.
Inside / Outside?
Most functions are in a hall of some sort (barn, scout hall, village hall, church hall, civic hall) but we are more than happy to play in a field, in a garden or in your house. Just tell us what you have in mind and we’ll work something out.
We have a large repertoire and can slant the evening towards Celtic dances and tunes (great for a Burns Night or Hogmanay, St Andrew or St Patrick celebrations).
Number of Guests
You really need at least 30 people to make a dance work. More is better (as long as your venue is big enough). Our standard PA can cope with a lot of people, but if you’re hoping to have a few hundred people, please let us know.
Please let us know if there will be a lot of children. We can then be prepared to do much easier dances. Children love barn dances – they really get stuck in :O)
On the day
Car Parking Space: We’ll usually ask for two space. Once for the band and one for the caller. Don’t worry if you can’t manage this, but please let us know what the situation is.
Melobo needs to arrive 2 hours before starting the dance in order to set up and do some sound checks. If you have a separate room for the dance, then this is easy to set up. If your venue only has one room however, think about what will work best for you. Often you can leave a space for the band, and we can set up very quietly so as not to disturb you or your guests.
A small table for our mixing desk (the sound system) and an electrical socket. Refreshments are aways appreciated :O)
We provide: The band, the caller, musical instruments, a PAT tested sound system and public liability insurance.
We turn up on time, are friendly and cheerful, and like nothing better than to make your dance the best it can possibly be!
